October 2011 Knives

This knife and sheath was made in the Scandinavian style with lots of hammer marks and pitting left in to give the blade more character and an aged look.
The Scandi was a new style for me. I really had alot of fun making it.  One of the things I like about Scandinavian style knives are their clean lines. The blade measures just over 3 7/8 inches long, 8 inches over all, and is made of L-6. This is a heavy sturdy blade. I did the "flex test" and the "chopping through a board test" with this blade. I was very happy with the results. It's just another testament to the overall simple yet greatly efficient design and functionality of a Scandi style blade.

Through tang construction insures a long lasting and durable handle.
The handle is made of white tail stag antler, leather spacers, and maple. The pictures just don't do the knife justice. The sheath is made of 8-10 ounce heavy leather. The sheath was tooled, moulded, hand stitched, dyed and sealed.  This heavy duty sheath has an adjustable braided leather thong.

I had fun last weekend making a new miniature knife. This blade is made of chainsaw chain damascus that I forged. I really like the pattern it makes. It's the strikingly unusual pattern combined with the super workhorse capacity of chainsaw chain that makes it a great damascus. This a closeup picture of the front side of the blade.  The blade measures 2.5 inches long, 5.25 inches overall, and is made of hand forged chainsaw chain damascus.

The tang of the blade was  hot fitted into the white tail stag deer antler and leather spacers to insure a long lasting and durable handle. The sheath is made of 5-6 ounce leather, tooled, moulded, hand stitched, and dyed. A leather braided thong is attached to the sheath and can be used as a belt loop or  hooked to a necklace to use as a neck knife.

Here's a couple of pictures of the backside of the blade.

This completed knife is the one I showed the full forging process on page

This knife is an upswept skinner design.

The blade measures  3.75 inches long, and 8.25 inches over all. This is a heavy sturdy blade. The tang is hot fitted to  insure a long lasting and durable handle. It has a nickel silver guard. The handle is made of white tail stag antler with white and lapis blue corian spacers. The sheath is made of 8-10 ounce heavy leather. The sheath was tooled in oak leaf and acorn design, moulded, hand stitched, dyed and sealed.

The knife is a one piece construction forged from a vintage railroad spike. I left in the original numbers and letters inprinted on the butt of the spike. Hammer marks along the spine were left in to give it a more rustic and dated look. The blade measures  4.5 inches long, and 9.25 inches over all. This is a heavy sturdy blade.

This knife was made in the primitive style with the use of no power tools, hand filed, and twisted. With the primitive style you will see minor file marks and tool marks. It is intentional, giving the knife a rustic, not store bought look. The sheath is made of 10-12 ounce heavy leather. The sheath was tooled , moulded, hand stitched, dyed and sealed.

The blade of the knife measures 2.75 inches long, 5.5 inches overall, and is made of hand forged chainsaw chain damascus. The miniature knife features a brass guard, white corian and black micarta handle with black and white spacers.

The sheath is made of 5-6 ounce leather, tooled, moulded, hand stitched, and dyed.

The blade measures 2.50 inches long, 4.5 inches over all, and is made of O-1 tool steel. I used a quarter for size reference in some of the photos.
The knife is a full tang construction. The knife scales are made of white tail stag antler with red spacers.

This knife was made in the primitive style with the use of no power tools in finishing the blade. With the primitive style you will see minor file marks and tool marks. It is intentional, giving the knife a rustic, not store bought look.
The sheath is made of 5-6 ounce leather, tooled, moulded, hand stitched, and dyed.

The blade measures 2.25 inches long, 4.25 inches over all, and was hand forged from an allen wrench. I used a quarter and an allen wrench for size reference in some of the photos. This is an all steel knife. The handle is twisted and scrolled. The knife is done in what is known as a blacksmith's knife style, made for the handle to loop through a rope belt or now days through a belt loop.

No sheath is included because a sheath was not meant to be used with this style of knife. One of the cool features of this little knife is that it sits flat on the handle scroll.

The blade of the knife measures 2.50 inches long, 5.25 inches over all, and is made of O-1 tool steel. The miniature bowie knife features a copper S guard and copper spacers. The spine of the knife was file worked with a nice vine pattern.

The tang of the knife was hot fitted into the vintage recycled hardwood handle. This knife was made in the primitive style with the use of no power tools in finishing the blade. With the primitive style you will see minor file marks and tool marks. It is intentional, giving the knife a rustic, not store bought look. The sheath is made of 5-6 ounce leather, with a stingray insert. The leather was tooled, molded, and dyed.

The blade of the knife measures 4.5 inches long, 9.25 inches over all, and is made of high carbon steel. The knife has a Mediterranean notch, and an integral bolster. The Mediterranean notch is traditionally used to remove fat from sinew and tying knots.

The tang of the knife was hot fitted into the stabilized buckeye handle. The sheath is made of 8-10 ounce leather. The sheath was tooled, molded, and dyed.
